Fu Xiaoshi Ink Painting: Ji Gong with Children and Dog
$6,400.00
This listing is for a lovely ink painting by esteemed Chinese artist, Fu Xiaoshi. This painting is rendered in Xiaoshis signature style, which is slack, striking and delicate. Many factors contribute to Xiaoshis distinct stylization. Some credit the influence of his father, prominent Chinese painter, Fu Baoshi whose main medium was also ink. However, it has come to be known that Xiaoshis style a result of his stroke, which rendered his dominant painting hand completely paralyzed.
His artistic transformation began following his paralysis. Although he was newly disabled, his desire to paint was still intact. Determined to create at any cost, Xiaoshi taught himself to paint with his left hand.
Given that his left hand was his non-dominant hand, his instinct and mobility were different. This altered his painting style, producing a new and one-of-a-kind aesthetic, both echoing Chinese Modernism and embracing his disability. Xiaoshis post-stroke works are particularly rare for this reason.
What was once an arduous effort, transformed into a unique kind of painterly sensibility; one that is loose, abbreviated, spontaneous and light. The painting shown here possesses all of those distinct qualities.
Looking at the painting, one will see a scene of the famed Chan Buddhist Monk, Ji Gong. He is depicted in the traditional fashion; a fan in one hand, wine in the other, crouching and sporting a cheerful, benevolent expression. He is seen here playing with two young children and a dog. The figures are detailed with red tones, which symbolize happiness and good fortune in the Chinese culture. Accents of blue and purple are featured as well. The subtle washes of color are outlined in black ink that varies in density, creating a sense of dynamism. These figures overlay an airy background rendered by thick, expressive brush strokes typical of Xiaoshi during his post-stroke period.
The painting is mounted on double-layer pink and black mat board situated in a gold frame with glass panel. Not only is this a stunning painting with a colorful history, but according to Taoist tradition, having images of Ji Gong will bring blessings of wealth.
Paintings like this are limited since Fu Xiaoshi passed away in 2016. Much of Xiaoshis work lives on in prestigious art collections from the China Art Palace (Shanghai) to the MET (New York). Owning one of his original works would be a highly compelling addition to any Chinese Fine Art collection.
CONDITION: Very Good with Minor Flaws
Paper appears to have slight bubbling as a result of not being smoothly matted and/or due to possible adhesive application. However, we are not sure of the cause. Despite these minor flaws, Fu Xiaoshi's carefree and whimsical creativity will captivate you.
Frame has very light handling scratches, as it is vintage. They are barely noticeable.
